Katong heritage cafe Chin Mee Chin will be opening its first mall outlet at NEX in Serangoon in Q3 2026, marking the brand’s first branch outside Katong after a century of serving customers from its East Coast Road home.
Founded in 1925, Chin Mee Chin has long been known for its kaya toast, sugee cake, cream horns and nostalgic coffee shop charm. Its original Katong outlet will continue operating, so Easties can breathe easy.
Chin Mee Chin Closed In 2018 Before Making A Comeback
Chin Mee Chin’s legacy nearly came to an end when it closed in 2018 due to manpower and succession issues.
For many Singaporeans, the closure felt like more than just another food business shutting down. It felt like another piece of old Singapore quietly disappearing.
The cafe eventually returned in 2021 under Ebb & Flow Group, together with members of the original founding family. Since then, it has managed to introduce itself to a younger crowd while keeping much of its old-school identity intact.
