Taiwan has sent an exchange student to Singapore, except this one is furry, endangered and much better at climbing trees. Meet Yaffa, an 11-year-old male red panda from Taipei Zoo who has arrived at River Wonders as part of an animal exchange programme between the two wildlife institutions.
His Singapore accommodation is pretty impressive too, with climbing platforms, tree trunks, a pool and air-conditioning that keeps his home below 25°C.
Yaffa will make his official public debut this National Day weekend at a new purpose-built red panda exhibit in the Yangtze River zone. He is also the first new red panda to join River Wonders in 12 years.

Before Meeting Visitors, Yaffa Had To Spend A Month In Quarantine
Yaffa arrived safely in Singapore in the early hours of 11 June 2026 and spent about a month in quarantine while his care team carried out a comprehensive health assessment. The checks included weight monitoring, a physical examination, ultrasound, X-ray and blood tests. According to Mandai Wildlife Group, the results indicated that he was in good health.
At 11 years old, Yaffa is considered a senior red panda, so his care programme also includes regular monitoring of his health and mobility.

There’s Already Another Red Panda In Singapore
Yaffa will not be Singapore’s only red panda. River Wonders is already home to Karma, another male red panda who lives at Pavilion Capital Giant Panda Forest. But before anyone starts writing a red panda BL or friendship arc, Mandai has not said that the two will be housed together or even introduced to each other.
Yaffa’s new development is being built with separate spaces for individual red pandas, and a second exhibit is still under construction.
Fewer Than 10,000 Red Pandas Are Estimated To Remain In The Wild
Red pandas are classified as Endangered, with fewer than 10,000 estimated to remain in the wild.
Their numbers continue to decline because of threats including habitat loss, poaching and the illegal pet trade. Yaffa’s move also supports conservation efforts and genetic diversity among red pandas under human care in the region.
