This Hidden HDB Zi Char Spot Has Been Around For 52 Years — And It’s Now 52% Off

Written by Kelly Khor

Under a HDB block in Queen’s Road sits a zi char spot that has been feeding Singaporeans for 52 years.

And it is still packed.

No rebrand. No gimmicks. Just solid food that people keep coming back for.

Westlake has been around since 1974. If you grew up in Singapore, someone in your family has probably eaten here before. It is the kind of place where grandparents bring their children, then come back again with their grandchildren.

Today, the restaurant is run by the third generation of the Lim family. They have kept the old school flavours that made Westlake famous, while adding a few new dishes for younger diners.

What You Should Actually Order

Let’s be real. You do not come here without ordering the Braised Pork with Pau.

This is the dish Westlake is known for. The buns are soft and fluffy. The braised pork belly is rich, glossy and tender enough to fall apart with each bite. Add the fresh lettuce and it cuts through the richness instantly.

It is messy, indulgent and worth every bite.

Beyond the pork buns, Westlake is also known for its classic zi char staples.

The Butter King Prawn is one of the big crowd favourites. The prawns are juicy, and the crispy butter fried coconut flakes add a sweet salty crunch that makes the dish seriously addictive.

The Hot and Sour Soup is another staple. It is slow simmered and full of a deep, tangy kick.

The Claypot Hokkien Mee also deserves a mention. It is rich, saucy and packed with seafood flavour. Proper comfort food that does not need to try too hard.

New Dishes Just Dropped

Even after more than five decades, Westlake is still adding new items to the menu.

The Stir Fried Beancurd with Green Chilli brings a sharper and more fragrant heat than the usual versions. The Claypot Chilli Frog Leg is bold, spicy and served with chee cheong fun on the side to soak up all that sauce.

If you want something simpler, go for the Minced Pork with Bean Sauce Noodle. It is hearty, savoury and comforting, with a recipe passed down from the founder himself.
