If you’ve never tried charcoal claypot rice, you’re missing the real thing.
Most places use gas now, faster but flatter in flavour.
Charcoal gives you that smoky aroma and crispy crust at the bottom, the kind that makes every bite better. Once you try it, it’s hard to go back.
That’s where Geylang Claypot Rice stands out. This long-running spot, with over 40 years of history, still sticks to charcoal cooking, holding on to a method that many others have moved away from.
What you should actually order
If it’s your first visit, the Signature Chicken Claypot Rice is non-negotiable. This is what everyone comes here for, fluffy on top with a crispy, slightly charred crust underneath, bringing together smoky, savoury flavours in every bite.
The Prawn Paste Frog Leg is another must. Crispy on the outside, juicy inside, and packed with flavour, it’ll likely disappear within minutes.
If you still have space, the Traditional Hokkien Mee with Pork Lard is worth trying. It’s rich, slightly greasy in the best way, and delivers that old-school zi char taste.
Round things out with sides like Beancurd Skin Roll or Prawns with Homemade Tofu, and if you’re in a group, the charcoal grilled BBQ crab makes a great centrepiece.
