Look up: Meteor shower will light up Singapore skies on 22 & 23 April 2026

Written by Kelly Khor

The Lyrid meteor shower is back this April, peaking on April 22 and 23, 2026.

It only happens once a year, and your best chance to catch it is between 2am and sunrise, assuming the skies are clear and the city lights do not get in the way.

What can you see?

You do not need any equipment. The meteors are visible with your naked eyes.

Under good conditions, you might catch around 10 to 20 meteors per hour, including occasional bright fireballs streaking across the sky.

In reality, especially in Singapore, expect fewer stars overall, and then suddenly, a single bright streak appears and disappears within seconds.

It is subtle, fast, and easy to miss, but that is what makes it special.

These are tiny bits of debris from Comet Thatcher burning up as they enter Earth’s atmosphere.

Where to go (Singapore edition)

Let’s be real — Singapore is not exactly “dark sky paradise”.

But if you want a fighting chance:

  • Head to East Coast Park, Marina Barrage, or reservoirs
  • Try quieter spots like Labrador Nature Reserve or Pasir Ris Park where it is slightly darker
  • Stay a night at Tiny Away Home at Lazarus Island
  • Find somewhere with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky
  • Avoid bright lights as much as possible

And most important:

Give your eyes about 20 minutes to adjust
Stay off your phone

If it is cloudy, you are unlikely to see anything, so it really comes down to timing and luck.
