Bukit Batok Library Reopens with Double the Space and Fresh Immersive Experiences

Written by Dania Rae

Bukit Batok Library just got a major glow up, and this is not your usual renovation. Think double the space, immersive sound experiences, and interiors that feel more like an art installation than a typical library.

Now spanning Levels 1 to 3 at West Mall, the newly reopened library has expanded to over 2,700 square metres, with almost twice the number of seats. In other words, more room to read, explore, and actually find a spot without stress.

First Immersive Soundscape Library Experience

Bukit Batok Library is also the first library in Singapore to use sound as part of the reading experience. As you move through the space, different areas come with their own soundtracks, inspired by real sounds from Bukit Batok. This is part of the SingLand Soundscape, which combines audio and visuals to create a more immersive environment while you read or explore.

Each zone is designed differently. The Sound Cave features nature and ambient sounds for a calmer setting, while the Time Caverns use archival audio and visuals to showcase Bukit Batok’s history. At the Sound Library, you can listen to recordings of everyday Singapore life, from festivals to neighbourhood sounds. There is also a Sound Pavilion, a quieter reading area with soft background audio for those who just want to sit and unwind.

New Tech Features

Beyond the immersive setup, Bukit Batok Library also introduces smart tech features that make discovering books faster and more interactive. With Scan n Discover, you can scan a book’s QR code and instantly get related recommendations. Infinite Shelves extend physical book displays into digital collections, giving you even more options to browse. There is also an audiobook discovery screen where you can explore and borrow titles directly through the NLB app.

Little Guilin in the library

The library’s design takes cues from Little Guilin, which is a stone’s throw away, creating a calm and nature-inspired space within the library. Families can explore the Story Caves in the children’s zone for cosy reading and storytelling, while those looking to unwind can head to Ripples Circle, a quiet area inspired by Zen garden patterns. It is designed as a space where visitors can read, relax and recharge.

More flexible Opening Hours

Another big plus is the extended access, which makes the library much more flexible to visit. You can access all three levels from 9am to 9pm, with staff services starting from 11am. The Multimedia and Study Zone on Level 2 stays open even later, until 10pm.
